The Viral 'You Are My Soul' Song Phenomenon: Who Really Sang the Mystery Track?
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
Q1: Who is the original artist behind the "you are my soul" song?
The original song is titled "You're My Heart, You're My Soul," written by Dieter Bohlen and performed by the German synth-pop duo Modern Talking, featuring lead vocals by Thomas Anders. It was originally released in October 1984.
Q2: Why doesn't the original version sound like the audio on TikTok?
The viral audio circulating on social platforms was digitally altered. Users slowed down the playback speed, dropped the pitch, and applied heavy digital reverb to either an acoustic cover or the original vocal stem, creating an atmospheric, bedroom-pop mood that obscures the fast-tempo 1980s Eurodisco instrumentation.
Q3: Is the song considered a lostwave track?
No. Although internet users frequently posted snippets to mystery-music boards asking for a track identification, the song is a multi-million-selling global hit that has remained continuously licensed and available in music catalogs since 1984.
Q4: Where can I find the slowed-and-reverb version on streaming services?
While unauthorized user edits get removed periodically due to automated copyright claims, several legal slowed-down re-records exist on Spotify under titles like "You're My Heart, You're My Soul (Slowed Down Version)" by various electronic cover projects, as well as official catalog re-releases from Sony Music.
