The Truth Behind the Lazytown Cast: Cancer Battles, Hoaxes, and Comebacks
The human performers only made up part of the town's ecosystem. The remaining citizens, Ziggy, Stingy, Trixie, Pixel, and Mayor Milford Meanswell, were operated by a mix of veteran American and British puppeteers whose technical craft is routinely overlooked.
Guðmundur Þór Kárason, who performed the candy-loving Ziggy, was a foundational co-creator of the original franchise. Kárason transitioned into industrial design, software development, and puppet mechanics, working behind the scenes on Nordic film productions. Jodi Eichelberger, the voice and hand behind the possessive Stingy ("The Mine Song"), transitioned into fine arts leadership. Eichelberger became the artistic director of Surel's Place, an Idaho-based non-profit artist residency, alongside writing and directing regional theater.
Ronald Binion, who operated the gadget-obsessed Pixel, went on to perform characters on Crank Yankers, The Book of Pooh, and multiple Jim Henson Company projects. These puppeteers worked beneath elevated stage floors for hours at a time, holding heavy mechanical armatures above their heads while looking at small monitor feeds strapped to their chests, an athletic feat every bit as taxing as Scheving's acrobatics.
