When Clarke and Moyet finished the master tape, Daniel Miller was initially skeptical. As the founder of Mute Records, Miller championed experimental post-punk, industrial soundscapes, and challenging electronics like Fad Gadget. A heartfelt pop ballad seemed too conventional for the label's aesthetic. Miller hesitated to release "Only You" as a lead single, unsure if underground radio DJs or alternative record shops would support it.

His reservations evaporated when publishing representatives and radio programmers heard the demo acetate. BBC Radio 1 picked up the track immediately. Issued in March 1982 with the dance track "Situation" on the B-side, "Only You" scaled the UK charts, reaching No. 2 and remaining on the charts for fourteen weeks. The sudden commercial explosion forced Clarke and Moyet to transform what was meant to be a one-off single project into a fully operational recording band.
