The 'Sus' Meme Decoded: Screenshots, Formats, and the Rise of Brazil’s Health Joke
By Chloe Bennett
Internet humor relies on manufactured forbidden knowledge. The psychological impulse to look up something when explicitly instructed not to is the primary fuel for bait-and-switch templates. Beginning in late 2020 and resurfacing in massive waves through late 2024, Reddit forums like r/okbuddyretard and communities across X capitalized on this exact reflex.
The template follows a rigid, theatrical pattern. A popular animated character appears visibly panicked, pleading with the audience to avoid querying a mundane geopolitical term. The punchline relies entirely on anticlimax. Users type the query, see a clean Brazilian government webpage or Wikipedia article, and realize they walked into an elementary pun.
By late 2024, tracking from the Know Your Meme trend database revealed a sharp resurgence driven by the indie gaming community. Edits featuring the Chara meme format from Toby Fox's Undertale and Deltarune exploded on TikTok and imageboards. Captioned with panicked text like "CHARA, I TOLD YOU NOT TO SEARCH THE NAME OF THE PUBLIC HEALTHCARE SYSTEM OF BRAZIL," the posts revitalized the joke for a new wave of teenagers who missed the initial 2020 wave.
