The Style Evolution: Tom Kaulitz’s Iconic 2000S Oversized Fits, Dreadlocks, and Guitars
Beneath the oversized jerseys, Tom took his musicianship seriously. To match the swelling arrangements of the band's debut album Schrei and its 2007 English-language counterpart Scream, he relied on classic, heavy-tonewood electric guitars. His primary instruments throughout the peak 2000s tour cycles were Gibson Les Pauls.
Tom favored the Gibson Les Paul Custom and Les Paul Standard lines, usually in classic Ebony, Vintage Sunburst, or custom white finishes. Les Pauls are notorious for their hefty mahogany bodies and thick maple tops, delivering warm, thick sustain and aggressive mid-range punch. Strung low across his knees, the guitar looked massive against his slender frame, amplifying his skater silhouette. Paired with high-gain Marshall and Mesa/Boogie amplification setups, Tom generated the crunching, melodic rhythms that drove arena anthems like "Rette Mich," "Ready, Set, Go!," and "Don't Jump."
During the massive 1000 Hotels European tour in 2008, Tom expanded his rig to handle more complex layered textures, adding acoustic breakdowns and cleaner atmospheric patches. His rhythm work anchored the high-energy live shows, allowing Bill complete theatrical freedom to command audiences of 20,000 screaming fans night after night.
