The Rise of 'Green Fn': a Complete Timeline of the Internet's Most Viral Slang
By Sarah Jenkins
Slang rarely achieves mainstream escape velocity purely through competitive gaming. It requires memes. For "Green FN," that inflection point arrived during late 2023 when video editors began splicing together surreal animations.
The trend centered on a bizarre juxtaposition. Content creators took clips from animated sitcoms, most famously Family Guy, showing Peter Griffin smoothly executing isolation basketball dribbles, and matched them with slowed, reverberated hip hop audio edits. Producers frequently selected laid-back, jazz-infused tracks such as instrumental beats from artists like Lucki or smooth piano loops.
As the animated character drained an impossible step-back jumper over an opponent, the music would briefly duck out. A deep, pitched-down voice whispered: "Green FN."
The comedy lived in the jarring contrast. Peter Griffin's round, clumsy character design combined with silky-smooth, NBA-caliber dribble moves and nonchalant swagger created an irresistible meme template. Within weeks, creators replaced Peter Griffin with animated figures from The Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants, and historical figures, all swishing contested jump shots to the identical audio track.
