The Origin of 'Why So Serious?': Fact-Checking Heath Ledger's Iconic Dark Knight Scene
Before The Dark Knight reached theaters in July 2008, Warner Bros. and alternate reality game (ARG) firm 42 Entertainment mounted an expansive digital marketing campaign. The four words spoken to Gambol served as the central engine for this entire promotional push.
In May 2007, fans visiting the promotional site I Believe in Harvey Dent uncovered hidden code that redirected them to IBelieveInHarveyDentToo.com. The site displayed a defaced campaign poster that slowly revealed the first official photograph of Ledger's Joker as users submitted their email addresses. Each decoded pixel brought the clown makeup into focus, punctuated by the slogan: "Why So Serious?"
During San Diego Comic-Con in July 2007, coordinates written on defaced dollar bills led thousands of participants across the city to bakery scavenger hunts, culminating in skywriting planes spelling out a phone number above the convention center. When dialed, the number played an audio recording of Ledger laughing, followed by his chilling delivery of the phrase. By the time the film premiered, the line had bypassed traditional pop-culture adoption and become a cultural meme before audiences had even seen the complete scene on screen.
