The final proving ground of any scholarly paper is the Works Cited page. It is also where students waste hours fighting the margins. A common mistake involves pasting source citations from external databases, noticing the entry lacks an indent, pressing Enter at the end of the first line, and hitting Tab. The moment any word is edited or the margins shift, the sentence breaks apart into jagged fragments across the page.

To establish a clean, indestructible hanging indent in Google Docs, highlight all reference citations simultaneously. Navigate to Format > Align & indent > Indentation options. In the pop-up dialog, locate the "Special indent" menu, select Hanging from the dropdown, and confirm the measurement reads 0.5 inches. Google Docs will lock the first line of each entry against the left margin while pulling all subsequent lines half an inch inward, preserving the arrangement regardless of screen magnification or font adjustments.

Keep these bibliographic rules aligned with your prose citations:

Ensure that your in-text citations directly reflect the leading entry name on the bibliographic page. If your in-text parenthetical reads (Morrison 42), the bibliography entry must begin cleanly with Morrison, Toni., organized alphabetically by author surname. Insert a clean manual page break ahead of the bibliography using Insert > Break > Page break (or Ctrl+Enter / Cmd+Enter). Never press the Return key twelve times to reach the bottom of the document; doing so guarantees that any edits made to your introductory paragraphs will send the Works Cited heading drifting awkwardly down the final page.
