The premiere of the 20th Anniversary streaming retrospective on Disney+ answered many long-standing narrative questions, but the physical absences raised new ones. While archival interview cuts filled portions of the runtime, several key figures were noticeably missing from fresh reunion segments. Industry reporting confirmed that personal estrangements and deliberate career pivots dictated the guest list.

Billy Ray Cyrus was an obvious omission from the retrospective's primary panel. Reports highlighted by Variety and People detailed how deep-seated familial rifts following Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus's 2022 divorce created insurmountable obstacles for a joint stage appearance with Miley. Though both publicly acknowledge the series as an indelible chapter in their lives, sources close to the production noted that coordinating a unified family segment proved impossible. Billy Ray's absence stood out given his dual role as co-star and executive producer of the original property.

Moises Arias also opted out of direct involvement. Arias has deliberately carved out an acclaimed lane in prestige television and independent cinema, starring as Norm MacLean in Amazon's adaptation of Fallout and appearing in Sundance festival entries. For Arias, returning to the Rico persona ran counter to years spent establishing himself as a serious adult character actor. Emily Osment maintained a limited, pre-taped presence, largely due to her network shooting schedules for the CBS comedy universe, underscoring how dispersed the core ensemble has become.
