The 'Habesha Secret Video' Exposed: Truth Behind the Leaked Footage
How did synthetic clips persuade so many viewers? The campaign relied on classic disinformation tactics designed to fool casual mobile browsers.
First came thumbnail spoofing. Channel operators created YouTube and TikTok splash cards featuring high-contrast police tape, an image of Engineer Simegnew, a snapshot of Dr. Milkisa Gemechu, and a play icon over a blacked-out surveillance frame. Clicking the link led users to long political rants where an off-camera narrator simply read aloud from diaspora blog posts without providing any visual evidence.
Second came engagement funneling. Content creators hosted 15-second teaser clips on TikTok and Instagram Reels with text overlays: "Watch the full secret video before the government takes it down." The accompanying links led viewers into private Telegram channels designed to boost subscriber counts for third-party monetization schemes. The promised tape was nowhere to be found.
