The Complete Faq: How to Stop Smart Promo Texts, Flash Alerts, and Vas Deductions
Flash alerts represent the most disruptive marketing delivery mechanism used by mobile networks. Unlike standard SMS notifications that rest quietly in a device inbox, a flash alert, known technically as a Class 0 message, overrides running applications, lights up the screen, and displays directly over the handset interface. Tapping "OK" on these prompts can accidentally trigger an active paid subscription or open an unwanted web session.
These alerts do not originate from standard texting apps. They are broadcast straight through firmware residing on the SIM card via the SIM Application Toolkit (STK). Eliminating them requires disabling broadcast messages at the SIM configuration layer:
For Android Devices:
Open the app drawer and locate the native system application labeled SIM Toolkit, Smart Menu, or Services. Tap the application, select Broadcast or Flash Messages, navigate to Activation, and select Deactivate or Turn Off. On newer Android releases with dual-SIM trays, ensure you select the specific Smart SIM profile before toggling the setting.
For Apple iOS Devices:
Navigate to Settings, scroll down to Cellular (or Mobile Service), and tap SIM Applications. Locate options referencing Smart News, Flash, or Promos. Enter the configuration submenu and select Cancel, Unsubscribe, or Off to shut down automated carrier pop-ups.
Restart your device once the toggle is saved. This forces the device baseband to refresh its operational profile with local cell towers, closing the active channel for commercial flash alerts.
