Striking a lighter immediately after filling is a common mistake. At freezing temperatures, butane vapor pressure drops significantly, meaning the liquid cannot vaporize quickly enough to sustain a flame. Striking now will simply produce dry clicks from the piezoelectric ignition.

Set the lighter on a flat surface and let it rest undisturbed for 3 to 5 minutes. This rest period accomplishes two essential things:

  1. It allows the liquid fuel to absorb ambient warmth, rising back to normal room temperature (68°F, 72°F) and establishing proper vapor pressure.
  2. It gives any stray butane vapor that escaped onto the outer casing or your hands time to evaporate safely into the air.

Once the body of the lighter feels warm again, pick it up and turn the flame height adjustment wheel halfway toward the positive (+) mark. Flick the ignition. The piezoelectric ignition mechanism will send a high-voltage electrical spark across the gas jet. The burner should catch immediately with a crisp, stable blue flame. Fine-tune the flame wheel in small increments until the torch measures roughly one inch in length with zero spitting.
