The Brutal Truth About the Ez Curl Bar Preacher Curl: Muscle Builder or Joint Hazard?
Executing this movement safely requires dialing in the bench geometry before loading plates onto the bar. Most lifters make the mistake of dropping the seat too low, forcing their armpits to hover inches above the pad. This loose setup forces the chest to support the load, allowing the shoulders to roll forward under strain.
Set the bench height so that your armpits rest securely against the top edge of the pad without forcing your thoracic spine into a hunch. Your chest should remain tall against the vertical support, while your triceps maintain seamless contact with the vinyl from the elbow up to the shoulder joint throughout every repetition.
Define an intelligent hypertrophy range of motion. Do not drop into an uncontrolled, bone-on-bone joint lockout at the bottom of the rep. Instead, lower the EZ curl bar smoothly under a controlled 3-second eccentric tempo, stopping roughly 5 to 10 degrees before complete extension. This small buffer keeps tension squarely on the muscle belly while safeguarding the joint capsule. At the top of the rep, reverse the motion before the bar passes vertical, preventing the resistance from resting on stacked joints.
