Tennessee Fireworks Truck Blast: Driver Cited for Hazmat Violations After I-75 Chaos
Traffic was moving at standard interstate speeds when drivers noticed dark smoke curling from the undercarriage of an open-frame utility trailer towed by a pickup truck. Within seconds, small pops escalated into continuous, rapid-fire detonations. Multi-break shells and aerial cakes ruptured through cardboard cartons, rocketing horizontally across the asphalt into adjacent lanes and the grassy median.
Drivers behind the smoking vehicle slammed on their brakes, reversing along the shoulder to avoid falling fireballs. Flaming debris ignited brush along the highway verge, while heavy plumes of sulfurous smoke wiped out visibility across all lanes. Emergency dispatchers received dozens of 911 calls from motorists reporting an apparent bomb or vehicle collision.
Troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and regional fire units closed the interstate in both directions. Fire crews held back until the continuous chain reactions subsided, as standard water streams cannot easily extinguish metal-fueled pyrotechnic compositions once thermal runaway takes hold. Miraculously, despite shells striking several vehicles and littering the roadway with smoldering casings, no fatalities or critical injuries were reported.
