Sweet Hollow Road Today: Community Preservation, Safety Alerts, and Local News
One of the corridor's persistent bottlenecks is the historic Sweet Hollow Road bridge, where parkway infrastructure crosses overhead. The stone-faced underpass was built decades ago to match the natural aesthetics of the surrounding woodland, long before modern commercial transit demands expanded across Western Long Island.
The underpass features tight horizontal clearances and low vertical headroom. Commercial box trucks, delivery vans, and oversized trailers repeatedly ignore early warning signs posted along Northern State Parkway exits and side streets. When a commercial vehicle enters the gorge, drivers face an impossible choice: scrape the underside of the overpass or attempt a dangerous multi-point turn on an unlit blind curve.
Bridge strikes disrupt both road traffic and parkway operations. Even when trucks avoid striking the span, passenger vehicles entering the dark underpass experience sudden visibility shifts. Sunlight quickly turns to deep shadow in summer, while winter snow creates hidden ice pockets beneath the concrete deck.
