Step-by-Step Visual Walkthrough: How to Locate Your Linkedin Url on Any Device
When an account is first created, the platform automatically appends a long, random sequence of digits and hyphens to the user's name. A default link looks like linkedin.com/in/jane-doe-b8472910a. This default formatting looks unpolished on resumes, takes up unnecessary space in email signatures, and signals low familiarity with basic platform customization.
Claiming a custom vanity URL takes less than two minutes on desktop:
- Open your profile page in a desktop browser.
- Look at the upper right column of the screen for the option labeled Edit public profile and URL. Click it.
- A separate management tab opens showing your profile as external visitors see it.
- In the top right corner, find "Edit your custom URL" and click the blue pencil icon next to your current address.
- Enter your preferred handle, ideally a variation of your first and last name (e.g.,
johnsmithorjohn-smith-cpa). - Click Save.
Custom addresses are case-insensitive, must contain between 3 and 100 letters or numbers, and cannot include spaces, symbols, or special characters.
While inside this editor, check your privacy settings toggle underneath the "Edit Visibility" header. If your public visibility switch is turned off, recruiters browsing outside the platform cannot view your page, rendering your newly copied link useless to external hiring managers. Ensure the toggle is switched to Public so search engines and hiring software can index your qualifications.
