Will Borat Ever Return? Sacha Baron Cohen Sets the Record Straight on the Iconic Persona
Undercover comedy on this scale carries an unsustainable logistical cost. The primary engine of the bit relies on total anonymity. The moment a target recognizes the mustache or the suit, the psychological tension evaporates.
By 2007, global fame made anonymous field filming virtually impossible in English-speaking territories. Cohen initially retired Borat alongside Ali G and Bruno because public exposure neutralized the premise. Resurrecting the character for 2020’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm required extreme subterfuge. Cohen had to apply layers of secondary prosthetics just to check into rural hotels, peeling off fake skin in secret before putting on the grey suit to film.
The physical danger escalated dramatically during that production. Filming an appearance at a gun-rights rally in Olympia, Washington, required wearing a concealed bulletproof vest under overalls. An angry crowd stormed the stage when they recognized the prank, forcing Cohen to hold the door of a fleeing getaway vehicle shut with his body while protestors pounded on the glass. The margin between daring performance art and severe violence had grown paper-thin.
