By the time *The Debut: Dream Academy* premiered on YouTube and Netflix in late 2023, Laforteza was 20 years old, placing her on the more mature end of the candidate pool. The survival competition demanded rapid adaptation. Contestants underwent intensive K-pop methodology camps in Seoul and Los Angeles, facing weekly eliminations assessed by vocal coaches, choreographers, and executive executives Mitra Darab and Bang Si-hyuk.
Throughout the competition's three missions, covering songs by Robyn, Paramore, and Spice Girls, Laforteza consistently secured the highest public vote totals worldwide. Her vocal stability during complex footwork routines earned praise from adjudicators. On the live finale broadcast in November 2023, days before her 21st birthday, host announcers revealed that Laforteza finished in first place overall. She was officially confirmed as the anchor member of KATSEYE, joining Daniela Avanzini, Lara Raj, Manon Bannerman, Megan Skiendiel, and Yoonchae Jeong.
Geffen Records soon designated her as the official leader of the sextet. Her balance of theatrical training, bilingual communication skills in Tagalog and English, and grounded demeanor positioned her as the group's natural public representative during media rounds in New York, Seoul, and London.
