Door casing frames the interior opening, bridging the drywall edge and the door jamb. The dimensions of your casing profile dictate how you space adjacent light switches, intersecting partition walls, and corner studs.

A standard casing setup leaves a 3/16-inch or 1/4-inch reveal, the narrow lip of the jamb face exposed between the inner edge of the casing and the door slab edge. If rough framing creates an uneven, out-of-square opening, finish carpenters often widen or narrow this reveal to hide wall imperfections.

Profile dimensions vary considerably across architectural styles:

  • Colonial and Ranch Casing: Typically 2-1/4 inches wide by 7/16 inch thick. These narrow profiles forgive rough framing offsets and fit easily into tight corners where perpendicular walls sit close to the opening.
  • Craftsman and Modern Flat Casing: Measures between 3-1/2 inches and 5-1/2 inches wide by 3/4 inch thick. These wide casings demand at least 4 to 6 inches of clearance between the rough opening jack stud and any adjacent wall corner.
  • Backband Profiles: Adds an extra 1-inch decorative rim to standard casing, widening the trim footprint past 4-1/2 inches.

When using wide, architectural casing profiles, your rough header height must account for the ceiling line. In older homes with low 7-foot-6-inch ceilings, an 80-inch door with a 5-1/2-inch Craftsman header casing and crown molding leaves zero margin for error. If the rough opening is cut high, the top edge of the casing will collide directly with the ceiling drywall.
