Runway to Real Life: How Designers Build the Volume Beneath Statement Skirts

Exploring the core elements of Runway to Real Life: How Designers Build the Volume Beneath Statement Skirts—uncover the essential highlights.

The unsung hero of runway tailoring techniques is synthetic horsehair braid. Originally woven from real equine mane fibers, contemporary versions are engineered from extruded polyester or nylon monofilaments woven in an open, diagonal crisscross grid.

This specific diagonal weave gives the braid an extraordinary property: it curves around hem arcs without creasing or rippling. When a tailor blind-stitches a three-inch strip of horsehair braid into an asymmetrical hem, the braid acts like an invisible spring. It casts the lower edge away from the ankles, causing waves in the fabric to flare outward rather than collapsing inward.

When building asymmetrical skirts, designers cannot simply drop a flat circle of tulle underneath. An uneven hemline requires uneven support. If the right side of a skirt drops into an elongated cascade while the left is cut high above the knee, the internal petticoat must mirror that exact geometry.

Master patternmakers calculate tension points across the inner slip. They build concentrated crinoline underskirts along the bias lines where the outer fabric gathers into draped knots. Without that targeted understructure, the knots pull the entire silhouette off-balance, dragging the waistline down toward the heavier side.
