Remember the Titans Cast: Fact-Checking Recent Rumors, Tragedies, and Tributes
Viewed in hindsight, the casting director assembled an astonishing collection of future box-office draws. At the time of filming in Atlanta, Denzel Washington was the sole undeniable marquee attraction. The locker room was filled with unproven twenty-somethings and child actors working for standard union scale.
Ryan Gosling portrays reserve cornerback Alan Bosley, a goofy country boy whose lack of defensive speed forces a pivotal substitution. Gosling had few credits beyond Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club and youth television when director Boaz Yakin selected him. Gosling’s role was deliberately minor; he spent most of his screen time dancing on the sidelines or handing his starting spot over to Donald Faison’s character, Petey Jones. Gosling pivoted quickly from the bench warmer to an Oscar-nominated heavyweight in Half Nelson, La La Land, and Barbie.
Donald Faison arrived on set directly from teen comedies like Clueless. His portrayal of Petey Jones showcased a blend of comic exasperation and physical athleticism that convinced television producers he could carry a prime-time comedy. Months after production wrapped, Faison landed the career-defining role of Dr. Christopher Turk on NBC’s hit sitcom Scrubs, anchoring nine seasons of television.
Wood Harris stepped into the shoes of defensive end Julius Campbell immediately after playing legendary drug kingpin Avon Barksdale in early development rounds of HBO’s The Wire. Harris brought an understated gravitas to Campbell that established the emotional core of the film. Alongside him, Ethan Suplee (guard Louie Lastik) and Kip Pardue (quarterback Ronnie "Sunshine" Bass) carved out steady careers across character roles and independent features throughout the 2000s and 2010s.
