Reliance's Next Era: a Timeline of How the Ambani Children Took Center Stage
The operational framework divides Reliance into three standalone verticals, effectively isolating each sibling’s capital demands, executive footprint, and performance metrics from one another. Akash Ambani, an economics graduate from Brown University, was named Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm in June 2022. Jio revolutionized India’s digital economy by running predatory data pricing, aggregating over 470 million subscribers, and deploying sovereign 5G infrastructure. Akash was deeply involved in negotiating landmark investments from Meta and Google during the 2020 pandemic, establishing his technical and financial credibility inside the group.
Isha Ambani, who studied psychology and South Asian studies at Yale before working at McKinsey & Company, directs Reliance Retail Ventures. The retail arm is an absolute juggernaut in physical footprint, managing more than 18,500 stores across grocery, electronics, fashion, and luxury, while integrating digital e-commerce through JioMart. Isha spearheaded aggressive acquisitions of global luxury licenses and heritage brands, giving the group dominance over India's rapidly formalizing consumer market.
Anant Ambani, the youngest sibling, took charge of the group’s most radical transformation: the New Energy and New Materials business. Anchored in the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex in Jamnagar, Gujarat, Anant oversees a planned capital deployment exceeding $10 billion. This division aims to build gigafactories for solar photovoltaic modules, green hydrogen, energy storage batteries, and fuel cells. By positioning Anant at the head of renewable energy alongside operational stewardship of Jamnagar’s legacy refining infrastructure, the company secured continuity between its present cash cow and its intended carbon-neutral future.
