Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area Guide: Beach, Trails, and Major Events
One distinguishing feature of the park is its fully staffed shooting and archery range, managed directly under the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shooting sports program. Situated away from the shoreline along the park's western perimeter, the complex draws marksmen from across the Detroit metro area who need safe, structured target lanes.
The facility provides covered firing lines with yardages set at 25, 50, and 100 yards for rifle and handgun shooters. It operates under direct supervision from certified range safety officers. Ear and eye protection remain strictly enforced, alongside clear cold-range cease-fire protocols. Adjacent to the firearm lines, an expansive archery course provides standard bullseye target stands alongside elevated shooting platforms and realistic 3D game targets for bowhunters tuning broadheads before fall deer seasons.
