Traveling to Japan for the Kirin Cup brought tactical alterations, but little calm. Inside the Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, Ecuador faced a technical Japanese side comfortable dictating tempo. Gallardo adjusted the lineup, fielding a more conservative midfield triangle to stop line-breaking vertical passes. The adjustment produced a far tighter defensive display, forcing a grueling 0-0 stalemate through regulation time.

Under Kirin Cup regulations, the deadlock moved straight to a penalty shootout. High-pressure shootouts can expose psychological fractures, and Yokohama was no exception. Several erratic spot-kicks from La Tricolor handed Japan the advantage, sealing another disappointing result on paper despite the defensive improvement.

Redemption came in modest increments during the closing friendly against Panama. Gallardo rotated his attacking bench, seeking answers for Ecuador's chronic inability to convert territorial control into shots on target. The Panama fixture yielded a gritty, narrow victory, finally ending the squad's multi-match goal drought. Yet, winning an attritional scrap against a familiar CONCACAF opponent did little to quiet the alarms raised during the preceding Asian fixtures.
