Writers of the Netflix spinoff intentionally structured Nikki and Nate as an inverse homage to Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) and Michael Kelso (Ashton Kutcher). In 1976, Jackie was the controlling princess and Kelso was the unfaithful jock.
With Nikki and Nate, the gendered tropes shifted. Nikki possessed the relentless ambition and sharp edge, but Nate was defined by his loyalty and domestic warmth. When they split, it honored the broader DNA of the franchise. Teen romances in Point Place rarely survive the weight of approaching adulthood.
The breakup allowed Nikki to exist as an independent young woman rather than half of a comedic duo. She begins to explore personal pursuits without managing a boyfriend’s emotional shortcomings.
