New Census Update: Montana’s Largest Cities Ranked by 2026 Population
The acceleration began during the early 2020s remote-work migration, but it did not dissipate when corporate offices reopened. Instead, capital settled permanently into specific pockets. Whitefish, Kalispell, and Bozeman absorbed high-earning households from California, Washington, and Colorado, driving rapid real estate appreciation. Local wages, tied predominantly to regional service, healthcare, and educational sectors, failed to keep pace.
This geographic concentration has altered local governance priorities. In Bozeman, designated the country's top college town for three consecutive years according to Montana State University tracking, student housing and tech-sector arrivals have absorbed available land inside the Interstate 90 corridor. Meanwhile, civic administrations in Missoula have focused on municipal management; a study featured by NBC Montana ranked Missoula among the nation's leading small cities for government efficiency. Yet efficiency cannot offset raw supply deficits. Vacancy rates across Western Montana routinely hover below 3%, pushing lower-wage workers outward toward perimeter commuter towns like Belgrade, Frenchtown, and Columbia Falls.
