Nepali Tiktok Explained: Current Rules, Content Takedowns, and How to Spot Fake Feeds
By Elena Rostova
Is TikTok currently legal to use in Nepal?
Yes. The platform operates legally across Nepal. The government officially lifted the November 2023 ban in August 2024 after ByteDance agreed to state compliance terms, including formal tax registration, assigning local liaison personnel, and adhering to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology's social media guidelines.
Why do outdated clips of floods and landslides go viral during every rainy season?
The platform's recommendation engine prioritizes high-watch-time content and rapid sharing. Old disaster videos provoke intense emotional reactions, triggering immediate comments and reposts. Accounts exploit this mechanic to farm engagement, pairing historic or foreign disaster footage with contemporary hashtags and sensational local audio.
What triggers an immediate content removal on Nepali TikTok?
Immediate takedowns occur when uploads violate content moderation policies covering hate speech, non-consensual imagery, financial fraud, or direct threats to public safety. Additionally, formal takedown notices submitted by Nepali cybercrime authorities regarding defamatory material or harmful disaster misinformation receive expedited human review.
How can creators check if their accounts are restricted?
Creators can assess account health inside the app via Settings under the Account Status tab. This dashboard displays active strikes, community guideline violations, and whether specific videos have been excluded from the For You feed due to unoriginal content, unverified claims, or copyright claims on background audio.
