Neil Sedaka's Real Personal Life: Archival Photos, Marriage Records, and Family Truths
Behind the stage lights, Sedaka's personal life was stable, private, and rooted in an enduring heterosexual partnership. In 1958, while working as a summer pianist at Esther Manor, a resort hotel in the Catskills' "Borscht Belt," Sedaka met Leba Strassberg, the daughter of the hotel's owners.
The couple married on September 11, 1962, right as "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Rather than adopting the chaotic lifestyle common among mid-century pop stars, Sedaka credited Leba with grounding him emotionally and shielding their finances from exploitative record executives.
By the early 1970s, when American labels dropped Sedaka entirely, Leba stepped in as his full-time business manager. She organized a relocation to England, booked local performance circuits, and negotiated directly with Elton John to launch his second wave of worldwide hits. In an industry notorious for short-lived marriages and bitter divorces, the couple remained happily married for more than six decades.
