Mrs. Doubtfire Returns: 4K Blu-Ray Release and Worldwide Musical Tours Announced
By Marcus Vance
Parallel to the touring musical's success, physical media distributors introduced a newly restored 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray transfer scanned directly from the original 35mm camera negatives. The release includes uncompressed audio mixes and archival featurettes highlighting Williams’ grueling makeup sessions with Oscar-winning artist Greg Cannom.
High-dynamic-range grading exposes nuances lost in earlier home video transfers. Details like the fine weave of Mrs. Doubtfire’s tweed skirt suits, the powdered pore work on the latex masks, and the subtle lighting shifts Columbus employed between the dingy Hillard apartment and the sunlit Pacific Heights mansion gain remarkable clarity. For home collectors and film preservationists, the disc serves as a tangible companion piece to the stage show, illustrating how practical makeup techniques paved the way for modern character transformations.
