Parenthetical documentation underpins academic integrity. Standard in-text parenthetical citations require the author's surname paired directly with the relevant page number, completely free of punctuation: `(Morrison 142)`. If a source lacks page numbers, common with online journals and multimedia reporting, cite only the author or shortened title.

When drafting historical or textual analysis, understanding how to add footnotes in Google Docs gives writers a structured outlet for clarifying remarks without cluttering the primary argument. Position your cursor directly after the terminal punctuation mark of the sentence, navigate to the system ribbon, and select Insert > Footnote (or strike Ctrl + Alt + F / Cmd + Option + F). Google Docs automatically generates a superscript anchor and deposits a matching number at the page footer. Keep the footnote copy in 10-point or 12-point font, apply single or double spacing according to departmental syllabi, and provide the supplementary historical or bibliographic note cleanly.

Modern source integration also requires adhering to the container framework introduced in recent editions. Digital sources rarely exist in isolation; an essay sits inside a journal, which sits inside a commercial database like JSTOR. Cite the primary item, the immediate container (such as the journal title in italics), and the larger hosting platform. Strip out noisy tracking queries and protocols like `https://` from URLs unless explicitly demanded by your department, favoring direct Digital Object Identifiers (`doi:10.xxx`) whenever cataloged.
