Minecraft Pumpkin Updates: How the 1.13 Update Changed Pumpkin Carving Forever
Carved pumpkins are essential utility blocks. Once hollowed out, their primary crafting role is the Jack o'Lantern. Placing a carved pumpkin directly above a single torch in any crafting window produces this light source, which outputs a light level of 15. Unlike standard torches, Jack o'Lanterns function underwater, making them indispensable for ocean monument exploration and sub-aquatic mining hubs.
The block also serves as the catalyst for defensive entities:
- Built by stacking two snow blocks vertically and placing the carved head on top.
- Formed by placing four iron blocks in a T-shape, with the carved pumpkin positioned atop the center column as the final block.
Placement order matters strictly. The game checks for the completed pattern only when the carved pumpkin is placed last. If placed earlier and moved via pistons, the entity will not summon in Java Edition.
Beyond construction, the carved pumpkin functions as defensive headwear. Equipping the block into your helmet slot activates an Enderman head disguise. While worn, direct crosshair contact with Endermen will not trigger hostility, removing the risk of wandering the End dimension. The tradeoff is severe visual restriction: an opaque pumpkin mask overlays the player screen, narrowing vision significantly unless mitigated through custom interface options or third-party accessibility resource packs.
