Megan Is Missing Barrel Scene Explained: What Really Happened to Amy?

The climax takes place in an arid expanse under direct sunlight. The killer mounts his camera on a tripod overlooking a pre-dug trench. In the ditch sits a large, blue industrial drum. Amy, gagged with duct tape and shivering with terror, is dragged to the pit.
The predator wrenches the lid off the barrel. Inside rests Megan's decomposing corpse. The audience is spared no details; the rotting, distorted features of the once-vibrant teenager are framed in direct view. Amy looks inside and lets out muffled screams, realizing that her missing friend has been dead for an extended period.
Without pausing, the killer shoves Amy into the drum on top of Megan's remains. The dimensions of the barrel force Amy into a fetal position directly against the decomposing body. The killer hammers the lid down, fastens the clamp, and begins shoveling soil over the container.
The audio design turns suffocating. The dull thud of heavy dirt striking metal continues for minutes. As the container disappears beneath layers of earth, the thuds grow faint until only the sound of desert wind remains. A closing title card informs the audience that neither Megan Stewart nor Amy Herman was ever located, and their attacker was never identified.
