Martin Scorsese Marital History Fact-Check: How Many Times Has the Director Been Married?
Scorsese’s first steps toward family life occurred long before red carpets and studio budgets. In 1965, while still a student at New York University, he married Laraine Marie Brennan. The young couple shared a traditional Catholic background and had a daughter, Catherine, in 1965. Yet Scorsese's compulsive dedication to filmmaking left little room for domestic routine. By the time he broke into feature filmmaking with Who’s That Knocking at My Door, the marriage was fraying. The pair formally divorced in 1971 as Scorsese relocated west to join the emerging New Hollywood revolution.
Hollywood amplified the instability. In 1976, riding high off the critical breakthrough of Taxi Driver, Scorsese married journalist and author Julia Cameron. The union was volatile from the start. Both were battling severe substance dependencies, creating an environment fueled by artistic ambition and destructive excess.
The marriage collapsed in less than a year. Cameron gave birth to their daughter, Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, in 1976, but the relationship ended in a bitter divorce by 1977. Cameron later chronicled her recovery and creative philosophy in her international bestseller The Artist's Way, while Scorsese openly acknowledged that the late 1970s brought him perilously close to fatal overdose and total professional ruin.
