Mapping the Ambani Dynasty: Full Family Tree of Dhirubhai Ambani’s Children and Successors
Dhirubhai Ambani started his commercial venture in 1958 inside a 350-square-foot room in Mumbai’s Bhaishanker Vaghji Building. The office had a single telephone, one writing table, and three wooden chairs. Having worked as a dispatch clerk for A. Besse & Co. in Aden, Yemen, Dhirubhai partnered with his cousin Champaklal Damani to trade spices and polyester yarn under the name Reliance Commercial Corporation. Dhirubhai named his flagship fabric label "Only Vimal" after his nephew Vimal Ambani, establishing an aggressive distribution network that bypassed established market syndicates.
Capital was scarce. The ambition was not. Dhirubhai turned directly to India’s middle class, staging retail public offerings in 1977 that created a dedicated domestic shareholder base. He brought his sons into executive roles early. Mukesh left his MBA studies at Stanford University in 1981 to oversee construction of the Patalganga polyester plant. Anil, fresh from the Wharton School, joined in 1983 to head corporate finance, government relations, and overseas fundraising.
By the late 1990s, the company had constructed the world’s largest grassroots petroleum refinery at Jamnagar, Gujarat. Dhirubhai viewed his children not as detached heirs, but as field operators tested through rapid capital allocation and grueling industrial execution. Yet his sudden passing on July 6, 2002, laid bare the fragile boundary between family solidarity and corporate ownership.
