Laura Kenny (Trott) Career Timeline: from Local Velodrome Prodigy to Global Cycling Legend
The four years between Rio and Tokyo brought profound upheaval. Following her marriage to fellow track sprinter Sir Jason Kenny in September 2016, she navigated the physical reality of elite athletics and family planning. The couple opened up to outlets like Newsweek in late 2016 about post-Olympic blues and the struggle to reconstruct motivation after sweeping the boards in Rio.
She gave birth to their first child, Albie, in August 2017. Six months later, she was back on the boards at the 2018 Track World Championships in Apeldoorn, taking silver in the team pursuit. The postponed Tokyo Games in August 2021 presented a tactical puzzle. While the British women’s pursuit team clocked a world record time in the first round, Germany smashed it in the final, leaving Britain with silver.
Kenny answered in the inaugural Olympic women's madison. Partnered with Katie Archibald, the duo launched a ruthless exhibition of tandem racing. They gained a lap on the field and won nearly every sprint interval, amassing 78 points, more than double their nearest competitors, Denmark, who finished with 35. The victory handed Kenny her fifth Olympic gold, cementing her status as an all-time cycling icon.
