Laura Kenny (Trott) Career Timeline: from Local Velodrome Prodigy to Global Cycling Legend
Track sprinting requires raw explosive wattage, but the omnium requires calculating probabilities at sixty kilometers per hour while your lungs burn. During Kenny’s peak, the International Cycling Union (UCI) ran the omnium across two punishing days featuring six separate disciplines: the flying lap, points race, elimination race, individual pursuit, scratch race, and time trial.
Kenny possessed an uncanny spatial awareness in bunch events. In the elimination race, colloquially called "the devil", the last rider across the line every two laps gets pulled from the track. Most riders ride the black measurement line near the bottom to shave distance, leaving themselves vulnerable to getting boxed in. Kenny floated three wheels back, slightly up the banking on the blue flier line. The move cost her extra energy, but it guaranteed clean air and prevented tactical trapping.
As cycling journalist William Fotheringham observed in The Guardian during her 2024 retirement, Kenny succeeded because she was fundamentally gutsy. She relished tight gaps and held her line against aggressive rivals who attempted to muscle her off the sprinters' lane.
