Kings in the Corner uses a standard 52-card deck with jokers removed. The game comfortably accommodates two to four players, though head-to-head two-player matches offer the deepest tactical control over board states.

The dealer thoroughly shuffles the deck and deals seven cards face down to each participant. If only two players take part, some house variants increase this starting hand to eight cards to accelerate early board interaction. Players hold their cards hidden from opponents.

The dealer places the remainder of the deck face down directly in the center of the table. This stack becomes the draw pile and stock. To initiate the card layout cross formation, the dealer draws four cards from the top of the stock and places them face up at the cardinal compass points, North, South, East, and West, bordering the stock pile.

These four exposed cards form the initial foundation piles. The four diagonal pockets radiating outward at North-East, South-East, South-West, and North-West remain strictly empty at the start of play. These vacant angles are the designated corner spaces for kings. Once the layout is clear, the player seated to the left of the dealer takes the first turn, and action moves clockwise around the table.
