Kimora Lee Simmons Addresses Coparenting Fallout: a Complete Timeline
By Sarah Jenkins
Understanding Kimora's fierce, unilateral protection of her household requires looking back to her childhood in Florissant, Missouri. Her biological father, Vernon Whitlock Jr., worked as a Federal Marshal and later as an investigator for the Social Security Administration before his career took a sharp downward turn. When Kimora was in grade school, Whitlock was convicted on federal narcotics charges and sentenced to prison. The sudden absence of her father left her mother, Joanne Perkins, a district manager of Japanese and Korean heritage, to raise the future supermodel entirely on her own.
Perkins worked multiple jobs to maintain stability, instilling an intense work ethic in Kimora while buffering her from the social stigma of her father's incarceration. Whitlock eventually reentered Kimora’s life after serving his sentence, but the foundation had already been poured. Kimora grew up observing a matriarch who operated without safety nets or male oversight.
When Kimora relocated to Paris at just 14 to walk runways for Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel, she carried that self-reliance with her. Colleagues from that era recall a teenager who negotiated her own spaces and tolerated very little outside control. The experience of losing a father figure to the federal penal system permanently altered how she viewed parental dependability. Friends close to the designer note that whenever her personal relationships have fractured, her instinctive reaction has always been to circle the wagons and assume total operational custody of her family unit.
