A1: No. Instagram never alerts contacts or places an icon next to your name indicating that you disabled the setting. To others, your profile simply appears as though you have not opened the app recently or are entirely inactive.
Q2: If I turn off active status, can I still see if someone read my message?
A2: Yes. Read receipts and active status run on separate systems. Unless you or your recipient specifically turn off read receipts in DM settings, the "Seen" indicator will continue to appear when a message is opened.
