Jerome Martin Memorial Timeline: Recent Updates and Service Announcements
By James H. Sterling
The sequence of service announcements reflected Martin’s characteristic emphasis on open civic access. Following initial private funeral arrangements reserved for immediate family, organizers scheduled a broad public remembrance ceremony on the grounds of The Valentine in downtown Richmond. The event occurred on February 8, 2026, drawing attendees from municipal government, grassroots arts collectives, and educational institutions across the Commonwealth.
The assembly mixed structured reflection with unstructured storytelling. Rather than a rigid ecclesiastical liturgy, the program featured brief remarks from close associates, interspersed with spontaneous reflections from longtime museum docents and community activists. Staff converted the multi-level gallery spaces into reflection hubs, displaying archival photographs capturing Martin's work alongside community groups across several decades.
