Jan-Michael Vincent Career Retrospective: 10 Iconic Roles from Big Wednesday to Airwolf
By 1974, Vincent took a sharp creative left turn into regional American tragedy with Buster and Billie. Directed by Daniel Petrie and set in 1948 rural Georgia, the film cast Vincent as Buster Lane, a popular high-schooler who falls genuinely in love with a marginalized, sexually exploited classmate played by Joan Goodfellow. Vincent discarded his polished exterior, replacing it with raw, achingly earnest affection. The film became an unexpected box office sleeper and cemented his range as a dramatic lead.
A year later, Vincent pivoted directly into blue-collar defiance with White Line Fever (1975). Playing Carrol Jo Hummer, a newly returned Air Force veteran fighting corrupt shipping cartels in a customized truck named "Blue Mule," Vincent tapped into post-Watergate working-class anger. Unlike the cartoonish machismo that populated late-1970s drive-in cinema, Vincent played Hummer as a man ground down by economic exhaustion, fighting purely because surrender was impossible.
