To understand the chasm between the two brothers, one must examine the chaotic suburban household in Bath Township, Ohio. Lionel Dahmer worked long hours as an analytical research chemist, often occupied with his doctoral research and professional obligations. His first wife, Joyce Flint, suffered from severe postpartum depression, chronic physical ailments, and prescription drug dependency. Jeffrey was born in 1960; David did not arrive until December 1966. By the time David was old enough to register domestic tension, the primary marital war between Lionel and Joyce had already calcified.

Lionel later acknowledged in his interviews that the household climate favored the younger child. David received warmth and attention that Jeffrey rarely experienced. Jeffrey was quiet, detached, and increasingly drawn to dead animals along rural roadsides. David was outgoing, athletic, and socially adaptable. The age gap kept them from sharing social circles or emotional closeness. They occupied the same roof as functional strangers.

The fracture peaked in 1978 during a fierce custody dispute. When the marriage collapsed, Joyce took 11-year-old David and moved to Wisconsin to stay with relatives, eventually relocating to California. Jeffrey, freshly turned 18 and finishing high school, was left completely alone in the Bath Township home. It was during that solitary window in the summer of 1978 that Jeffrey committed his first murder, killing hitchhiker Steven Hicks. David, living hundreds of miles away under his mother's care, had no inkling of the violence taking root back in Ohio.
