Is Katseye K-Pop or Western Pop? Unpacking the Hybe-Geffen Mastermind Experiment
By Alexander Ross
Q1: Is KATSEYE considered a K-pop group or a Western pop group?
A1: KATSEYE is officially classified as a global girl group based in the United States. While created via HYBE’s South Korean idol training methodology and management systems, they perform exclusively in English, reside in Los Angeles, and make Western commercial pop music aimed primarily at international markets.
Q2: How were the members of KATSEYE selected?
A2: The six members were chosen through The Debut: Dream Academy, a joint survival program run by HYBE and Geffen Records between September and November 2023. Over 120,000 global submissions were filtered down to twenty trainees, with the final lineup decided through a blend of panel evaluations and global public voting.
Q3: Why was KATSEYE nominated for Best K-Pop at the 2026 MTV VMAs?
A3: The group received the nomination because award committees frequently tie acts to their parent company's cultural origins. HYBE’s direct executive and creative management led nominating boards to group KATSEYE under the K-pop umbrella, despite their songs containing no Korean lyrics and originating in American recording studios.
