Is Kathy Bates Really Playing Elon Musk? the Truth Behind the Viral Biopic Rumors
By Elena Rostova
The joke did not gain traction purely from the Variety mention. It landed because internet culture had already laid the groundwork years prior. As early as 2019, users on Reddit’s r/funny and r/walmartcelebrities routinely posted side-by-side photographs comparing Musk’s clean-shaven, fair-skinned profile with Bates’ signature screen roles from Misery and Fried Green Tomatoes.
Musk’s distinct facial contours, punctuated by prominent cheekbones and a narrow brow, became a recurring visual gag whenever high-resolution press photos caught him in unflattering lighting. Commentators noted that if you softened Musk’s features slightly, the resemblance to Bates in her late-1990s character work was surprisingly pronounced.
When the A24 announcement surfaced, the existing meme merged seamlessly with real film industry trade news. Rather than feeling like an entirely fabricated rumor, it triggered an immediate "I see it" reaction from millions of casual scrollers. Satirical digital artists amplified the effect by running Bates’ face through AI photo tools, blending her appearance into Tesla press conferences and SpaceX launch control rooms.
