Is Kathy Bates Really Playing Elon Musk? the Truth Behind the Viral Biopic Rumors
By Elena Rostova
The rumor trace begins on November 10, 2023. A24 confirmed it had won a competitive bidding war to develop a biographical feature on Elon Musk, putting Oscar-nominated filmmaker Darren Aronofsky at the helm. Adapting Walter Isaacson’s comprehensive 688-page authorized biography, the project promised an intense character study comparable to Aronofsky's previous psychological portraits.
Entertainment outlets immediately drafted fantasy casting rundowns. Business Insider weighed options such as Jesse Eisenberg and Kevin Durand. Variety took a broader, more eccentric approach. Alongside credible character actors, writer Jordan Moreau included Kathy Bates, writing: "Hear me out: Bates has the dramatic chops to play an eccentric billionaire, and she and Musk have a surprisingly similar facial structure."
Online audiences rarely parse deadpan trade humor. Aggregator accounts on X immediately stripped the satirical context, blasting out breaking-news graphics with Bates’ portrait next to Musk. Within forty-eight hours, secondary aggregator accounts reposted the pairing as confirmed casting, generating over 180,000 reposts and spreading across Facebook groups where users debated whether Hollywood had completely lost its mind.
