Long before becoming known to mainstream audiences as Ronald Isley’s devoted partner, Kandy Johnson was an accomplished vocalist in her own right. Alongside her sister Kim Johnson, she formed the duo JS (Johnson Sisters). The siblings honed their harmonies singing gospel in California before transitioning into mainstream contemporary R&B.

Their vocal agility caught the attention of Ronald Isley, who was actively writing and curating hits during his early-2000s renaissance. Isley signed the duo to his management fold and helped secure a major venture through DreamWorks Records and Def Soul.

JS broke through nationally in 2003 with their debut studio album, Ice Cream. Propelled by the lead single "Ice Box" and the infectious title track "Ice Cream" featuring The Isley Brothers, the duo showcased intricate vocal arrangements. The project was executive produced by Ron Isley, who positioned them as direct successors to classic female soul harmony groups. While commercial label shifts disrupted the duo's subsequent output, the musical synergy established during those studio sessions cemented a lasting bond between Kandy Johnson and the Isley patriarch.
