Is Ilia Malinin Gay? the Viral Comments and Rumors Behind the Skating Star Explained
By Marcus Vance
Digital culture around winter sports often treats athletes like characters in an unfolding teen drama. For Malinin, born in Fairfax, Virginia to Olympic skater parents Tatiana Malinina and Roman Skorniakov, growing up in the rink meant his life remained hyper-focused on jump mechanics rather than public red carpets. When he burst into senior international dominance by sweeping the Grand Prix circuit and dominating the World Figure Skating Championships, casual viewers immediately flooded search engines with queries about his background, family, and romantic partners.
The question gained traction across platforms like TikTok and X through two distinct digital phenomena. First, internet algorithms frequently conflate Malinin with broader conversations regarding LGBTQ figure skaters. Team USA teammate Amber Glenn has long been an outspoken, proud queer and bisexual figure within the sport, earning widespread admiration for her visibility. Because Malinin and Glenn train together, post casual videos backstage at national events, and openly support one another during tense competitions, search engines routinely grouped their names together under trending LGBTQ figure skating tags.
Second, Malinin built his early following on social networks by acting like a typical Gen-Z athlete. He ran casual Twitch streams, joked in gaming Discord servers, and shared candid warm-up bloopers. In that freewheeling internet environment, self-deprecating jokes, playful banter with male peers, and offhand remarks were repeatedly clipped by fan accounts, stripped of original context, and reposted as supposed "hints" regarding his orientation.
