Is 'И' Really the 10Th Letter? Fact-Checking the Russian Alphabet Sequence
Software engineering adds practical complications to alphabetical numbering. When developers build database sorting tools or index lists in SQL, Python, or JavaScript, collation algorithms do not always treat Russian letters with uniform logic.
Standard Unicode assigns Ё (code point `U+0401` for capital, `U+0451` for lowercase) outside the continuous Cyrillic block running from А (`U+0410`) through Я (`U+044F`). If a software engineer writes a naive binary sort without localized collation tables, Ё ends up sorted completely out of order, either before А or after Я.
To prevent broken search experiences, many lightweight web applications strip diacritics during input ingestion. They convert Ё directly into Е before indexing. While this optimizes server lookups, it distorts positional ranking for users writing automated trivia scripts or querying index slots directly.
