Is 'A Night in Barcelona' Real? the Truth Behind the Yuri on Ice Rumor
By Chloe Bennett
The persistence of the rumor also stems from Japan’s doujinshi marketplace. Independent artists regularly sell self-published manga at events like Comiket, often producing high-quality unofficial side chapters set during the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona. Several prominent doujinshi circles released short graphic books centered on Victor and Yuri's evening after the banquet or following the short program.
When scans of these independent manga reached international platforms, bad machine translations and decontextualized social media posts labeled them as "official storyboards" or "cut concept art from MAPPA." This telephone game convinced a subset of Western viewers that an uncensored adult scene had been animated and subsequently suppressed by television censors. Japanese broadcast standards for late-night anime are strict regarding explicit content, but MAPPA never animated such material for this project in the first place.
