Is 'A Night in Barcelona' an Official Yuri on Ice Ova? Fact-Checking the Rumor
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
The confusion surrounding a supposed Barcelona OVA traces back to how fans package content online. Following the television run of Yuri!!! on Ice in late 2016, community creators on platforms like Archive of Our Own (AO3) and Tumblr produced thousands of works chronicling the downtime between competitive routines. Dozens of widely shared fan fiction titles and unofficial fan-made doujinshi used variants of "A Night in Barcelona" or "Barcelona Nights" as their titles. Over time, algorithmic video scrapers began pairing those popular titles with re-uploaded clips of the show, tricking younger viewers into searching for an independent film.
Another layer of confusion stems from official marketing terminology. Japanese animation studios frequently market retail Blu-ray extras as original video animations (OVAs). When Avex Pictures bundled a special exhibition skate featuring Yuri Plisetsky, titled "Welcome to The Madness", onto the sixth Japanese Blu-ray disc in May 2017, international search queries jumped. Audiences conflated the genuine exhibition extra with the celebrated banquet flashback, inventing an unreleased OVA in the process.
